New York City Family Session

There’s something about a family session in the city that is just a blast. And for this session, it was with a family I adore. Mom, Dad, and the kids all came out to Tribeca, Manhattan, in New York City for a family session on October 15^th that ended up being so much fun.

The Shirke family is such a special family to me. I photographed Aneil and Katie’s wedding day and since then, I have been pleased to document their energetic and vibrant family every year since little Caroline was just one year old.

One of the best parts about being a family photographer is watching kids become their own people, with their own personalities, likes, and dislikes. For example; Katie told me that Caroline is so considerate and thoughtful and loves to do things for people. She loves to help Dad make pancakes and add in her special secret ingredient (chocolate chips, shh!). And James loves to be imaginative and to make people laugh. James also likes to make up special songs with new words every time—something that reminds Aneil of the lighthearted little kid he used to be.

I was also able to see those personalities come out in the session itself. It wouldn’t be a Shirke family get-together without pancakes, so of course, Caroline and James helped to make them. One of my favorite photographs of the whole day was Caroline’s awe as she watched James put a whole egg, shell included, into the pancakes. I love seeing their dynamic as siblings. James’ exuberance and humor mixed with Caroline’s thoughtful consideration made for a unique blend.

I also loved seeing Caroline at the piano—since she has loved to play since she was very small—and James playing basketball in his room. But the picture that gave me pause was Caroline examining her brand new pierced ears in the mirror. I saw in that moment a glimpse of a future, thoughtful young woman, and it got me thinking about the amazing person she was becoming, instead of the little baby I first met. Since I don’t have any children of my own yet to see them grow on a daily basis, when I get to peek into those everyday moments, I am always touched by that same feeling of growth and love.

Aneil & Katie, thank you for once again letting me into your family’s lives. I love seeing you all every year and watching your kids grow. You two are such wonderful, nurturing, patient parents, and your kids are nothing but wonderful. I’m so happy that Caroline and James will have their beautiful photographs in the artwork we designed for your home to remind them of the love and support that surrounds them daily from their amazing family.
